Belmore Females

Our Stud females are run under the same conditions as our commercial herd.

We aim for cattle with structural excellence, outstanding udders and teats, deep bodied, wide ribbed, cattle that have an advantage in doing ability with a good temperament.

Above: Among the first registered cattle breeders to weigh calves at birth we know well that birth weight and gestation length are critical factors in calving ease - calf survival being our number one criteria.

Showing Highlights

We have enjoyed outstanding success with our cattle at many of Australia’s major shows including:

Breeding the only Shorthorn to win Supreme All Breeds Female at the Royal Melbourne Show in 1986 with Belmore Gaiety 22nd.

In 1994, 1995 & 1996 Belmore exhibited two Grand Champions and three Junior Champion’s at the Melbourne Royal.

1994 saw Belmore Ultrabright L22 (P) win Supreme in Adelaide and Belmore Washington N6 (P) win both Junior All Breeds and Supreme All Breeds Beef Bull at Melbourne Royal

1994 Belmore Warbash N23 (P) set a long standing record at Naracoorte Bull Sale with a price of $13,500. Not only is Warbash still working at Tom Butler's "Myrtle Holme" at 13 years but dam Belmore Nandi K8 (P) is looking superb and still breeding at Belmore. 5 daughters retained

Belmore Bulls

We have had considerable success showing bulls, winning many Champions at both Adelaide and Melbourne Royal shows.

The highlight of our showing must be with Belmore Washington N6 who won Grand Champion All Breeds Junior Bull and went on to be Supreme All Breeds Bull at the 1994 Melbourne Royal Show. That was the first time a Junior Bull had ever won both awards and has only been done once since.

Belmore bulls are raised on pasture in mobs of up to 60 head. Bulls for shows and sales are run with their mobs with no supplementary feeding until after their 400 day weights.

These teams are then fed for 80 -90 days on a light grain/ hay ration. We believe this is important to determine which bulls respond well to grain supplementation considering the vast majority of their male progeny are sold to feed lot company’s such as Australia Meat Holdings (AMH) for long term grain feeding. It is well documented that a small percentage of cattle of all breeds do not handle grain diets well.

In pastoral regions Belmore bulls have performed exceptionally well in good times and even out gaining Bos Indicus infused cattle in the tough times resulting in many repeat clients.

Belmore bulls are sold at the Naracoorte, Northern, Dubbo and Alice Springs Show and Sales and are selected privately throughout most of the year and at our Beef Field Day in February.

Commercial Herd

We run a very successful commercial operation alongside our stud as we believe this is the perfect way to assess our genetic performance in an environment matched by our bull buyers.

With 200 females mated each year the steer progeny are sold to feedlots for long term feeding for the Japanese premium B3 market with a percentage of steers marbling score 5 or better.

Steers sired by Belmore bulls have regularly recorded marble scores of 5+ and a score 7+ was gained in 2001.

Surplus commercial females have founded a number of purebred Shorthorn operations.
